Periodontal Treatments
What you need to know.
Treatments can have a biological purpose (treatment of periodontal disease) or aesthetic purposes (periodontal plastic surgery).
Periodontal disease
Periodontal disease, popularly called "periodontitis" is a chronic degenerative disease of the tissues around the teeth (gums, bone, ligament around the tooth). Periodontal treatment cures tissues around the teeth, especially soft tissues. The therapy of this disease involves removing the cause of the diseases (bacteria and periodontal pockets in which they evolve).
Causes
Periodontal disease, or periodontitis, has a lot of causal factors involved. Although it’s a disease caused by bacteria, a number of other factors contribute on the evolution of the disease. They can be hereditary factors - if anyone in the family had periodontal disease (periodontitis), habitual factors - unhealthy habits such as smoking, bad hygiene, type of food and other dental problems that worsen the disease etc.
Symptoms
- Gum problems - Inflamed and bleeding gums
- Bad taste - bad breath
- Mobility
- Gingival retractions
Treatment
Over 70% of cases are treated nonsurgical. In the remaining 30% of the cases surgical manoeuvres such as tooth extraction and dental implants are necessary, or reconstructions with pink ceramic. Here you can see an example of a severe case of periodontal problems. All the detail for the periodontal disease treatment steps.
Maintenance
A good oral hygiene is recommended (must use an oral shower) change lifestyle by eliminating the habits that can aggravate the disease, quit smoking, performing at least 3 professional cleanings a year. If you follow these instructions, the prognosis is very good.
Periodontal Plastic Surgery
Periodontal plastic surgery represents a series of micro-surgical interventions that restore harmony and gingival health. When teeth are too long or too short, or have different sizes, gum remodelling is essential in getting a beautiful smile. Also gingival health is extremely important for getting a natural look around any type of dental work, and natural teeth.
Gingival graft - or connective tissue graft, represents transplantation of a small volume of tissue for covering a gingival retraction or a lack of tissue. It ‘s necessary for the aesthetic (the visible smile) when the root of a tooth is exposed, resulting a longer tooth, when there is a lack of volume after an extraction, or when there is an unpleasant coloration on the gum, or transpires through. Gingival graft is a procedure that adds tissue (gingiva). Full cure time is 8 weeks.
Gingivectomy and coronary lengthening - At the opposite of a dental grafts, we have gingivectomy and coronary lengthening procedures that remove gum, where it is excessive. It is necessary in the aesthetics area (the visible smile) if we have small teeth, covered by gum. This procedure is very simple, heals extremely fast, and has immediate aesthetic impact. No need for suturing. The gum is healed completely between 10 and 14 days. In many cases, for getting permanent results, a bone contouring is necessary. Then talk about coronary lengthening. In this case, the healing time is 8 weeks, as in graft cases.
